Tasmania's food and drink businesses do a lot with a small island: seafood, cheese, fruit, cool-climate wine and a busy distilling scene, with Hobart's restaurants and the stalls of Salamanca Market selling it all. Refrigeration sits behind every one of them. Here's what to know when you order commercial refrigeration from the mainland.

Freight across Bass Strait

Everything we send to Tasmania crosses Bass Strait, so allow a little more time. Once your order is paid and processed, it's usually dispatched within 1 to 3 business days. Delivery to Hobart then usually takes 5 to 10 business days, and the rest of Tasmania usually 5 to 14. SeaRoad, the Bass Strait shipping line, is among the carriers we use. These times are estimates, not set dates, so if you're fitting out for the start of a season or a new venue, order early.

What you pay for freight comes down to the item's weight or volume and your postcode. Checkout prices the smaller items for you; a large fridge's delivery is usually worked out and invoiced once you've ordered. If you'd rather know the figure up front, try the delivery box on the product page or send us a quote request. King Island, Flinders Island, rural roads and tricky sites can add courier charges that checkout can't see, and we'll be in touch if they do.

A cool climate, a hot kitchen

Hobart has the coolest summers of any Australian capital, so the weather is rarely what pushes a Tasmanian fridge to its limit. The kitchen is. A fridge beside a pizza oven, a fryer or a dishwasher breathes far hotter air than the street outside. Makers rate every model for a maximum room temperature, and across our range those ratings run from 25°C up to 43°C, so choose for the spot the fridge will actually stand in. Leave the maker's ventilation gap and keep the condenser clean.

Cool weather does help one machine. An ice maker's output is measured at set conditions, often 21°C air and 10°C water, and cooler rooms and colder water work in its favour.

Seafood, produce and the cellar door

Seafood needs cold, clean display. Deli display fridges put fish, oysters and smallgoods on show, and flake ice makers make the soft ice that seafood is traditionally displayed and packed on. Sushi bars can look at our refrigerated sushi display cases. For cellar doors, distillery bars and wine bars, wine fridges and back bar coolers keep the bottles at serving temperature. Kitchens that cook ahead for a busy weekend can bring food down to fridge temperature quickly and safely in a blast chiller.

Warranty and service from the mainland

Warranty and repairs go through each brand's Australian supplier, in writing, and the supplier handles the claim. Our warranty page lists who to contact for every brand we sell. Some suppliers say plainly how they cover Tasmania: Hoshizaki says it has sales and support offices in every state, and Moffat lists phone and email contacts for Tasmania. If you're outside Hobart, it's worth asking how a brand covers your area before you buy, and our AI assistant or our team can help you check.

Delivered so far

We've delivered to Hobart and to the North West coast around Devonport, three Tasmanian postcodes in all. Standard delivery is kerbside to a commercial address, every delivery is tracked and needs a signature, and damage must be reported within 24 hours, so check the unit before the driver leaves. One more thing: Tasmania has daylight saving and Queensland doesn't, so from October to April our Brisbane team is an hour behind you.

Questions and answers

Tasmanian orders: questions and answers

How long does delivery to Hobart take?

Usually 1 to 3 business days to dispatch once paid and processed, then about 5 to 10 business days to Hobart and 5 to 14 to the rest of Tasmania. These are estimates, so order early for an opening.

How much does freight to Tasmania cost?

It depends on the item's weight or size and your postcode. Smaller items are priced at checkout; larger items are usually calculated and invoiced after you order. For a price first, use the delivery box on the product page or ask us for a quote.

Do you deliver to King Island or Flinders Island?

We deliver anywhere in Australia. Islands can attract extra courier charges that checkout doesn't show, so ask us for a delivery quote before you order.

Who repairs my fridge under warranty in Tasmania?

The brand's Australian supplier handles warranty claims, in writing. Our warranty page lists who to contact for each brand. Outside Hobart, ask how a brand covers your area before you buy.

What ice maker suits a seafood display?

Flake ice is the usual choice: it's soft and moulds around the product. Our flake and granular ice makers list their daily output; check the spec sheet for the air and water temperatures it was measured at.
